One of the most peculiar therapy systems that FAIM is investigating is one that uses ordinary magnets to heal. Although magnets have been used in therapies for a long time, this particular method uses pairs of magnets to neutralize disease-causing pathogens in the body.

This system is known as "the biomagnetic-pair by Dr. Isaac Goiz Durán." It first caught our attention while doing a site-visit in a public hospital in Ecuador. We later learned that this method, although basically unknown in the U.S. is practiced in many countries, especially in South America. FAIM continued its investigations by interviewing practitioners and patients of this therapy. After much documentation has been reviewed and many cases studied we are nonetheless perplexed. The reason is that the anecdotal evidence is there and the scope of the claims made by the practitioners of this therapy are truly remarkable.

Dr. Isaac Goiz Durán, a Mexican physician, first discovered the principles behind this therapy more than 20 years ago when treating an AIDS patient. After putting two magnets, one on the rectum and the other on the thymus gland, the patient recovered shortly. Dr. Durán proposed that this pair of points have a relationship to each other for harboring the pathogens that cause AIDS: the HIV virus in the rectum and Escherichia coli in the thymus gland. What makes it possible for these two pathogens to survive in these niches is the alteration of the local pH values: the virus relishes an acid environment while the bacteria an alkaline one. Furthermore, according to Dr. Durán, these two pathogens resonate with each other and cause the collapse of the immune system. By placing simple magnets on these two places, the local pH is neutralized, causing the pathogens to be immediately eliminated. In the case of AIDS, one would place the positive end of the magnet on the thymus and the negative end on the rectum. Dr. Durán calls this bi-focal relation between these two disease-causing points of the body the "biomagnetic-pair." In the years that followed, Dr. Durán and his adepts discovered hundreds of such pairs relating to most diseases inflicting humankind, including scourges such as cancer and hepatitis. By presenting this catalogue of pairs, Dr. Durán claims that most of these diseases can be cured by this simple method of placing these magnets in pairs.

It is FAIM's duty, when faced with such claims of a universal cure, to take the evidence seriously without being absorbed in any enthusiasm. It is exactly the amplitude of these claims that have made this system be overlooked by other research institutions: it is simply considered too good to be true. It is exactly this exploration where no one else wants to go that makes FAIM's role particularly important and interesting.

Dr. Isaac Goiz Durán teaches his therapeutic method in a five-day workshop. He claims that about 10,000 practitioners have taken his course. Of these nearly 10% are medical practitioners and physicians. Most of these are in Mexico. Every year Dr. Durán organizes a conference in Mexico City where hundreds of these practitioners come together to listen to presentations of medical cases and research projects. The graduates of Dr. Durán's courses are certified by him to apply his therapy. They are encouraged to work on research projects, which need to be written up in the form of a mini-thesis as a prerequisite to participate in the second-level course that lasts three days. Dr. Durán publishes these research projects in big yearbooks. Looking though these publications one cannot help but be impressed by the vastness of applications and the promises of this therapy. However, none of the research projects have

the standard which is acceptable for indexed journals Indeed, without such publications, this therapy cannot go anywhere.

Dr. Durán had originally intended to teach this therapy only to medical practitioners. Then he changed his strategy and started teaching everyone. Now he has even started to teach indigenous people in Ecuador and Chile to show that with the good intentions to heal, even without any prior medical knowledge, anybody can effectively learn this method. Although there are no statistics to corroborate the claims, he shows videos of the members of these abandoned communities declare how, thanks to the magnet therapy, they now have an effective healthcare system.

This year FAIM participated in the Mexico City conference and gathered medical testimonies of people who claimed their lives were saved thanks to Dr. Durán's method. FAIM also picked up the publication of a research project by Dr. Durán and Dr. Raymon Hilu in Malaga, Spain. Two hundred and fifty people were treated with magnets and Dr. Hilu, using his method of dark-field microscopy, did a before-and-after analysis of the cases. The conclusion is that nearly everyone was cured. The perplexed Dr. Hilu claimed that such cases could effectively have been treated using his expensive orthomolecular treatments lasting at least half a year. But, he was not prepared to see such results in a matter of minutes.

Dr. Durán not only has developed a method of treatment but has also redefined the etiology of many diseases. For example, cancer in its malignant form is caused by the infection with the leprosy bacteria; it resonates with a series of other specific viruses, fungi and bacteria that have already been weakening the milieu. By placing magnets that eliminate the pathogens, Dr. Durán claims that cancers should resolve by themselves.

The therapy consists in its own diagnostic tool by placing the negative magnet on any of the hundreds of points in the body that make up the biomagnetic-pairs. If the body gives a reaction it means there is a pathological problem. This will happen when the right leg shrinks, which can easily be detected by comparing the edge of the two heels. The practitioner places a magnet on a point, for example the thyroid, and then checks the length of the feet. If the right leg shrinks then the practitioner knows that there is a problem and will place the other magnet in the corresponding bio-magnetic pair. In the case of the thyroid it is the back of the head, which according to Dr. Durán, identifies a meningitis infection. If, after placing the second magnet, the legs return to equal lengths, the practitioner knows that a bio-magnetic pair that needed correction has been identified and will leave the magnets in place for about 15 minutes. In this short time the problem is supposed to be corrected – in this case, the meningitis virus has been eliminated. Thus, in this point-by-point way, the whole body is scanned to detect specific viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites that – according to Dr. Durán – find their alkaline or acid niches to survive and, through a resonance effect, cause almost all diseases.

Unfortunately, because of the way this discipline evolved over the years, one is presented by a whole lot of evidence tangled and knotted like a woolen ball. Although all this evidence does generate enthusiasm it is not enough to make an assessment because of lack of a scientific method. In the following year, FAIM will help organize a system to help gather systemized scientific evidence. Hopefully, this will shed some light on this seemingly very fascinating therapeutic system.
