Depression is the common cold of mental health; it is widespread and we haven't been good at treating it, until now.

Depression has a range of insidious and unpleasant effects including sadness, behavioral apathy, biological aspects including sleep disturbance, cognitive deficits of concentration etc, and an impaired ability to function socially. Little wonder then that it causes such distress. This course covers the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy solutions to depression.

Stress and worry ruin the lives of thousands of people, and yet there are effective techniques to counteract it.

An increasing number of people have reported feelings of 'stress', often stemming from a particular worry which then generalizes to cover virtually the whole of the person's waking - and sleeping - hours. This effectively wrecks the quality of the person's life, and often of those around them. This course aims to provide Cognitive Behavioral Therapy solutions to this, including where the stress is 'real'.

Panic is devastating for those who suffer from it, and the techniques for dealing with it are specific to it and very effective.

Panic is underrated by those who have never experienced it. Typically, it virtually disables the person during the attack; they feel as though they are seriously ill, cannot see properly, and may not be able to control themselves. It is usually associated with agoraphobia as the sufferer does not wish to venture far from 'safety'. This course aims to cover the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies both for panic and related agoraphobia.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder usually takes over the sufferer's life, and it is the behavioral element of CBT that come to the fore in treating it.

An obsession is where the person has a fixed idea that is distressing (e.g. that their hands are contaminated and will lead to a serious illness or death) and a compulsion to perform a particular behavior (in this case, probably to wash their hands). This often has a ritualistic nature to it (e.g. to wash 3 times) and the whole syndrome can devastate a person's life both in terms of time, relationships, and finances. This course covers the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy solutions to OCD.

Frequent irritability is a demanding condition which requires the therapist to be at home with all elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Being irritable and angry is remarkably common, and can devastate the sufferer's life in terms of broken relationships, employment, general enjoyment, and, sometimes, criminal conviction. It can be a complicated area with a range of variations, and this course aims to give a comprehensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy solution.

When use of mood altering substances gets out of control it ruins the person's life - until we help them regain control.

The maladaptive use of mood altering substances (importantly, including alcohol) may easily devastate the life of the user and of those around them. Although onset may be insidious the effect can be far reaching and difficult to reverse without skilled and determined intervention. This course covers the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy solutions.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is literally a life changing disorder. It is famously difficult to treat, yet Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can produce impressive results.

Experiencing a life-threatening event can leave the person with effects including: persistently re-experiencing the event (e.g. intrusive thoughts and images of it), a numbing of general responsiveness (e.g. less interest in significant activities and a feeling of detachment from others), persistent hyperarousal (e.g. difficulty sleeping, irritability, exaggerated startle response) adding up to significant distress or impaired functioning. This course examines effective Cognitive Behavioral Therapy based interventions (a) to ameliorate these effects and (b) to greatly improve the patient’s quality of life where some effects cannot be mitigated.

CBT with Personality Disorder

Personality Disorder causes distress both to the individual concerned and those around them…

And yet it is so poorly understood even by professionals that the term 'Personality Disorder' is sometimes used as little more than a term to describe patients who have consistently frustrated those who are trying to help them. This course is designed to provide delegates with (a) a proper understanding of personality disorder and (b) professional and effective ways of responding to the most difficult behaviors that people with personality disorder produce, and (c) a clear and systematic sequence of steps to consistently deliver successful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy based interventions.

CBT with Suicidality

Suicide is one of the major mental health problems, in terms of causing ‘lost years of life’ it outranks virtually every physical disease.

It is something that frightens many therapists who may only think to ‘have the person admitted’. This often simply delays the problem: within one month of discharge is a key time for suicide. If the patient is already admitted, the problem is obvious. This course aims to have us relish the prospect of seeing people who are suicidal, because we will know what to do: we will notice them, we will be able to manage their suicidality, we will be able to give them hope, and we will be able to deliver on that hope.

CBT with Self Harm

It is estimated that about 10% of adolescents in the UK self harm, resulting in around 24,000 hospital admissions annually.

And it is not confined to adolescents. Self-harm is a common and distressing behavior for those who do it and for those around them - including professionals. This course addresses it directly and effectively, showing (a) how to develop an understanding of why some people self-harm in spite of the distress it causes, (b) learn a clear sequence of steps that are necessary in treating people who self harm, and (c) how to provide support for the person when you are not available, and support for yourself when you need it.

A cognitive approach to working with offenders gives a clear framework in which to analyze and work with most offenders.

It is an approach that is increasingly being recognized as giving very good results when well delivered. An underlying principle is that the offenders' behavior (like that of everyone) depends largely on the five Be-BEST factors involved in modern Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. If we can change those factors then we can usually also change the offending. This course aims to provide those working with offenders with sufficient knowledge of a cognitive approach to enable them to apply it safely to their caseload.
