The Healing Benefits of Color Therapy

Color therapy is also known as chromotherapy, colorology, or light therapy. This therapy is a type of healing that uses the visible spectrum of light and color to influence a person's mood and to affect one's physical and mental health. Because each color falls into a certain vibration and frequency pattern, it is believed that it can be used to affect the energy and frequencies inside our bodies. Light enters the human body not only through one's eyes, but also through human skin. Therefore, when each color enters the body, the resulting vibrations and unique frequencies activate hormones and, consequently, chemical reactions that affect emotions and enable the body to heal physically, spiritually, and psychologically. The following list describes the color therapy chart and identifies each of the seven areas of the body, known as the "chakras" or "spiritual centers" (according to New Age thought), and each one's associated color. The list will also outline how each color helps to heal its associated organs and bodily systems and promotes healing physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Red is associated with the first chakra, which is located at the base of the spine. Red offers healing in the gonads, kidneys, spine, and sense of smell systems. The use of red also promotes healing and survival methods. While red hues, unfortunately, tend to bring on anger, rebellion, and eccentricity, they also bring out feelings of courage, strength, sacrifice, ambition, power, and energy. If you are in a red room, you may experience these emotions and not even realize it.

The third chakra is located in the solar plexus region. The color yellow is highly associated with this region, and therapy using yellow aims to improve one's power and ego. Chromotherapy using yellow is supposed to help heal issues with the stomach, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas. While yellow can invoke uncertainty, caution, and fear, it also produces warmth, intuition, logic, optimism, and happiness. The use of yellow is often prescribed for patients experiencing depression due to its cheerful effects.

Green is associated with the fourth chakra which is located in the heart. The color green is used to promote feelings of love and sense of responsibility. The use of green positively affects the functioning of the heart, lungs, and thymus. While green can bring on actions of frankness and sometimes laziness, it also makes people exhibit symptoms related to calmness, fertility, relaxation, prosperity, and hope. Green is often used in medical clinics to promote a calm and healing-oriented atmosphere.

The color blue is essential to the fifth chakra, which is located in the throat. Blue is said to promote functioning in the physical and spiritual communication systems. It also plays an integral part in the healing of the throat, ears, mouth, and hands. While blue can bring on feelings of despair, stiffness, and sadness, it is most commonly known for its healing ability to foster feelings of quietness, balance, and order. Blue is often used in classrooms to help maintain a quiet atmosphere and an orderly environment.
